Jakar / Bumthang
Bumthang is a district embracing 4 valleys (Choekhor, Tang, Ura, Chumey) with Jakar as its main town. It is said, the name may be derived from "bumpa", a vessel resembling the shape of the region.
Just behind Trongsa the road climbs up to Yotong La (3.400m) from where it decends again for almost 70km along conifer forrests and old Goembas.
The area is famous for textiles, namely the Yathras - handmade woollen cloth, showing the typical geometric Bumthang-patterns - which are finished to jackets (Toegos).
Jakar, almost 2.600m high, sits at the entrance of Choekhor valley. Wouldn't it be for the people in their national dress, one would again feel transfered to a "ghost town" in the Wild West - low huts opening to shops and food stalls bordering a wide mainstreet.
At the eastern confine of the town the road crosses a bridge over the Bumthang river and leads up to the new Namkhe Nyingpo Goemba with over 300 monks. The terrace of the monastery provides an imposing view toward Jakar Dzong, towering on the opposite hill. It was built in 1667 and always defied tibetan invasions.
Beneath the Dzong the route reaches into Choekhor valley with all the countless monasteries and small Goembas.
